Tanning bed leaves 10-year-old burned, mom burning mad
According to a recent report by Fox News, a 10-year-old girl in England suffered burns on 70 percent of her body. The cause: an unmanned tanning bed.
Apparently, the girl’s mother gave permission because the girl was “curious.”
The full report on this story never mentions the accountability of the mother.
The harmful, if not detrimental effects of ultraviolet light is not a topic of recent discovery or publicity. This, of course, begs the question, what was a 10-year-old girl doing in an unmanned tanning bed? And moreover, what was this 10-year-old girl doing in an unmanned tanning bed without the supervision of her mother, especially since the mother knew where the girl was?
The photograph provided on the Fox News Web site accompanying the piece hints to a side of the story not covered in the text. The girl’s skin has lost its red hue and has been left with hundreds of freckles, a form of skin discoloration and pigmentation; the result of excess UV damage. Her mother sits to her left with a skin tone that can only be described as reminiscent of the green-haired, candy-loading helpers of Willy Wonka.
The mother is now demanding that all unmanned salons are shut down. Hmm….
